DESCRIPTION:Recent disasters around the country have shown the need to have a bug-out bag to ensure you have what you need quickly. Many people caught in the California fires had no time to grab anything and did not plan for such events. Similar events have occurred around the country in North Carolina and other places. This class will discuss how to create a bug-out bag\, which is different from a 72-Hour Kit. \nA bug-out bag (BOB) and a 72-hour kit serve similar purposes but have key differences in focus and contents: \n\nBug-Out Bag (BOB)\n\nDesigned for evacuation and survival over an extended period (potentially more than 72 hours).\nContains gear for self-sufficiency\, including shelter\, tools\, food\, water purification\, first aid\, fire-starting supplies\, and self-defense items.\nAssumes you might be on foot or away from civilization for a while.\nUsed in Poop Hits The Fan situations\, natural disasters\, or civil unrest.\n\n\n72-Hour Kit\n\nDesigned for short-term survival (three days).\nFocuses on basic needs like food\, water\, hygiene\, and first aid.\nOften kept in homes\, cars\, or workplaces for temporary emergencies (e.g.\, power outages\, storms\, evacuations).\nTypically lighter and more convenience-based than a BOB.\n\n\n\nKey Difference: A BOB is more extensive and long-term\, while a 72-hour kit is for immediate emergencies with the expectation of rescue or return to normal conditions. \nOur wonderful instructors\, Dan and Cheryl Dinnell\, have excellent experience in preparing for these type of things. While RSVPs are not required\, it does help our instructors know how many are attending so they can prepare for handouts and demonstrations.

DESCRIPTION:Everyone needs to learn how to defend themselves. It’s a commandment as shown in Alma 48:14: “Now the Nephites were taught to defend themselves against their enemies\, even to the shedding of blood if it were necessary; yea\, and they were also taught never to give an offense\, yea\, and never to raise the sword except it were against an enemy\, except it were to preserve their lives.” \nOur instructor\, Robert Welge\, a black belt in karate\, teaches a very interesting class on using simple techniques for self-defense. This approach isn’t complicated and doesn’t require extensive training. He provides effective techniques to help you defend yourself in most situations. He taught this class at the last safety fair a few months ago\, and it was well received. This knowledge is valuable for anyone wanting to protect themselves in a time when violence has become more common for various reasons. Don’t worry; you won’t need to get up and practice defending yourself\, as most of the class involves observing the instructor. A few techniques will be taught when you work with a partner.

DESCRIPTION:With the recent fires in Los Angeles\, it has become imperative for each of us to be prepared for any type of fire and to do everything we can to prevent one in our homes or on our property. This presentation will be led by Scott Means\, the city of Sparks’ emergency preparedness specialist\, and Nikhil Narkhede from the Division of Forestry for the state of Nevada. They will provide insights to help everyone in our stake be prepared for a fire\, whether they live in an apartment\, a house\, or on a ranch. We will also discuss emergency evacuations and how to prepare for such an event. Even a relatively minor earthquake here could disrupt our fire hydrant system and allow fires to spread. Scott spent three weeks in Los Angeles and will share firsthand accounts of what occurred there and how we can prepare in case something similar happens here. \nYou’re welcome to bring a friend.
